Asbestos poses increased health risks when it is disturbed, for example during removal, transport and disposal. It is therefore important that asbestos be handled appropriately during these operations.
The EPA regulates the disposal of waste asbestos, whether of industrial or domestic origin, under the Environment Protection Regulations 2021. In addition, the EPA regulates the transportation of asbestos of industrial (including commercial or trade) origin. Under the Regulations, asbestos that is industrial waste (including commercial or trade activities) is considered a Reportable Priority Waste (RPW)
The management and removal of asbestos in workplaces is covered by the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017(opens in a new window). The Environment Protection Regulations 2021 provide the regulatory framework for the management, handling, and disposal of reportable priority waste .
